"Immigrants in Our Own Land" Analysis

Wow. That was a depressing poem. Anyways...

As kids, we have big hopes and dreams. We believe we can go do whatever we want and become anything we want. However, as we grow up, we face the cold realization that that is not true. We go face to face with reality. We learn that life isn't fair, and we have to accept that. Jimmy Santiago Baca was able to incorporate all of this into his poem "Immigrants in Our Own Land."
The beginning of the poem brings you into a sense of optimism, the sense that you can accomplish whatever you want. The diction is uplifting; it brings a smile to your face as you read the first line. But as the poem goes on, the diction becomes gloomy as written "Our bodies decay, our minds deteriorate, we learn nothing of value." The speaker is connecting his expectations to reality, and as we read each stanza, he is becoming despondent.  The speaker is facing reality and realizing that his dreams will, sadly, not come true.
The middle of the poem introduces new immigrants arriving, so the speaker reminiscents about his past, describing his new take on life. The diction is just depressing now as Jimmy Santiago writes,  "Some will die and other will go on living." The speaker talks like a part of him has died inside, the hope at the beginning of the poem gone. He believes the same thing will happen to the new incoming immigrants.
The last few lines of the poem end on a sad  note.  The speaker is in jail, and the person he was before is long gone.  We learn the lesson that  some dreams we have will disappear over time, and we have to accept the fact that reality is cruel and unfair. Jimmy Santiago Baca has written an incredible poem that goes to show the terrible parts of life.

MY MAD DREAM OF AN ESSAY

Remember that time you ate that spicy chicken just before you went to bed on the night before the big dance?  Oh, that weird dream you had about the 2016 presidential election.  When you woke up you couldn't quite remember the exact details, but after reading "On Self-Reliance" and "A Sound of Thunder" it's all coming back to you now.

The dream started badly.  You were in line with your family at a restaurant waiting to be sent to school.  Everywhere you looked there were posters of president-elect Bird Brain, looking like a crazy elephant who could eat a whole cake.

Suddenly, there was Ralph Waldo Emerson telling you, "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself."  You realized that you have something to contribute to the world so you decided to run.  But it wasn't easy.  First, you had to put on a fancy suit and tie and then you had made a machine to go back in time to the beach so you could convince people to learn about the candidates and the foreign policy

But right there on the beach, there was a giant octopus and it started yelling at everyone.  People started to cry.  You grabbed a gun from a nearby sandcastle and yelled "MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR LIFE BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.  Everyone stopped and listened, so you kept going.

Every choice you make influences not only yourself but others as well. Try to make the best decisions for yourself, in which the decision helps others as well.  Don't be afraid to speak out too. Everyone has an opinion and great ideas;  you just need to express them. Also, don't let past decisions dictate how you live your life in the present. Have confidence in yourself. One small mistake doesn't define who you are. In the essay' On Self-Reliance", Emerson makes us agree that if we don't say what we have on our mind, someone else will say that idea and steal the credit. That is why you should have confidence in yourself and express your ideas. In "A Sound of Thunder", the main character, Eckles, makes a major decision that changes the entire future.  His decision changed the entire world. This is why you should believe that everyone has the power to change the world. You just need to make the effort to do it.

AN EARTH SHATERING FART

Personally, I found this story interesting. Stories that go beyond our present-day technology are amazing to me. Unfortunately, the main character was a coward. He ruined history by running away. However, I feel as though a lot people would run away if they saw a real life Tyrannosaurus.

SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT THE BOOK I'M READING

The book I am reading is the sequel to Madeleine Roux's Asylum. The sequel Sanctum continues the story of Dan Crawford and his friends Abby and Jordan. Their college prep program has left them scarred, and everything seems like the asylum is calling them back. They decide that they need closure, so they return to New Hampshire College, but just when they return, things are already getting weird. First, a creepy carnival is happening at the school, and then someone tries to commit suicide.
I am very engulfed in the series. I went to Barnes and Nobles a few weeks ago to buy the whole series. While the books have a few parts that don't make any sense, I still enjoy the series. The mystery behind the asylum and the pictures provided in the book have kept me reading for hours. I really enjoy the series and, I hope it has a great conclusion.

Team Vocab

This presidential election has transformed into a battle, with venomous attacks from both aggravating parties. Hillary has remained stolid, and I personally wanna punch Trump in the proboscis. His supporters have slowly dissolved and the ones who have remained are hypnotized into believing America will be great again. This is a melancholy moment in American history because soon one of these candidates will be president. I earnestly believe that neither candidate should be eligible for office.

Literature Analysis #2

Many things drew me to this book. When I was walking around the book section is Costco, I saw this book. The cover picture looked interesting to me, and I ended up reading the book. The whole time I forgot that I was supposed to help my mom with groceries. Afterwards, I told a friend who reads books constantly. She said that she read the book, and the book actually scared her. This drew me even closer to the book.
I kept reading this book because it felt relatable. I understood what the main character was feeling.  This immersed me even more into the book. I also enjoyed the pictures the author put in the book. It felt like I was actually seeing the world through the main character's eyes.
My reading habits include reading whenever I can and reading for hours. When I read a book, I don't want to put it down. I forget about everything else that's happening, I just read. Sometimes reading gets in the way of doing homework and sleep.

A HUG IS NEARLY A GUN SPELLED BACKWARD

Is caring about your friends and family more important than being patriotic towards your country?  Personal relations refers to close connections between people whereas patriotism is defined as your love for your country.  While personal relations with people is a part of life, so is being proud of  where you live. I agree with E.M. Forster's view that personal relations are more important that patriotism.
Although having a love for your country is significant, I believe one's connections with other people is more important. Patriotism can connect people with each other's pride for their country, but isn't that it? Is pride for one's country the only thing that connects patriots? With personal relations, you know the person. You have things in common, and you can rely on each other. Patriotism can only get you so far in life.
One's love for their country is also short-term. The world is not perfect. Nations make terrible decisions sometimes. For instance, Brexit was a huge mistake for the UK. How could the citizens of the UK still feel patriotism knowing they made a huge blunder that negatively affected their economy? Patriotism is temporary; it only comes every so often. Bonds with friends and family last a lifetime.
Overall, personal relations are more important than patriotism. If people could connect personal relations with patriotism, one's country could become a whole lot better. However, separately, personal relations is more important. Personal relations will get you farther in life than patriotism. Don't make the mistake of choosing your country of your friends and family.

MISTAKES FOR PRESIDENT

The presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton was hilarious. I couldn't believe what I was watching. What I was thinking the whole time was "How could anyone choose one of these clowns to be president?" In the debate, Trump was accused of supporting the war on Iraq. He clearly said he supported the war on Iraq in a previous interview, but Trump just responds with "Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong." Good response, Trump. Also, does Donald Trump not know how to be polite? It was just interruption after interruption after interruption. He also insulted Hillary many times during the debate. For instance, he said Hillary doesn't have enough stamina and that she's a career politician. In the end, I don't know what is going to happen to this country.

MY YODA

My ideal mentor for my Big Question would be a psychologist or a psychiatrist. A psychologist is a professional who studies and evaluates the behavior and mental characteristics of a person. A psychiatrist is a medical practitioner who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental illnesses. These medical professionals could help me understand why people think and act a certain way. They could teach me the cause of why we judge people so easily. I believe the problem could be with a person's past or what a person is currently going through, and a psychologist or psychiatrist could help me understand how this problem affects people. Overall, I'm sure I would learn a lot from these medical professionals.

I'M HAVING THE TIME OF MY LIFE

I love playing the piano and guitar. Anytime I get to practice is always an amazing time for me. I try to learn songs people for people so I can see the smile of their face when I play it for them. Although it gets frustrating sometimes to learn a song, the feeling of completely learning a song overcomes the frustration. Since I have a guitar class, I'm happy practically every single day. I get to practice the guitar,  and when there is free time, I get to play the piano as well. At the end of the day, I'm having the time of my life.

BIG QUESTION DISCIPLINES

To recall, my big question is "Why are people so quick to judge others. You don't know what's going on in another person's life. You don't know what another person is going through. A person could be going through something terrible that day, and people just meeting that person would assume the person is rude or shy. Why can't people keep an open mind about what others might be going through?"

Psychology
Ethnic Studies
Gender Studies

I'M READING BIG BROTHER

  • Written by George Orwell
  • "Politics and the English Language"
  • The decline of a language has politcial and economic causes, not due simply b/c of the bad influence of this or that individual writer
  • The English Language becomes ugly and inaccurate b/c our thoughts are foolish but the sloviness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts
  • Modern English is full of bad habits
  • Staleness of imagery/Lack of precision
  • The writer wither has something and can't express it or he is indifferent as to whether his words mean anything or not
  • Mixture of vagueness and sheer incompetince

BAD WORDS

The use and meaning behind a word is what determines if a word is good or bad. If I were to call someone a b****, it's a bad word because I am calling a person a bad thing.  Bad words also catches a person's attention. Normal words work as well, but bad words bring a sort of important atmosphere with it. Good words and bad words increase the understanding between people. People use different language with different people, so the type of words you use on each person increase your understanding of that person. The appropriate time to use euphemism is when you're talking about a serious matter. However, you should not try to use it as much. Don't beat around the bush. Sometimes you have to get to the point and use certain words like cripples instead of physically disabled, deaf instead of hearing impaired, or blind instead of visually impaired.

BIG BROTHER'S FIRST IMPRESSION

George Orwell's "Politics and the English Language"  is a an interesting but difficult read.
It talks about the mistakes writers often make. Orwell uses five paragraphs as examples of bad writing.  Two common mistakes writers make are staleness of imagery and lack of precision. Some specific mistakes writers make are the use of dying metaphors, pretentious diction, and meaningless words.

Satire Project: Drugs are a huge problem in the world

It is a terrible thing to know millions of people in the world use illegal drugs and the number of  people who use drugs is increasing. More and more teens get addicted to marijuana every year. Several adults suffer from alcohol abuse and dependence which could lead to even more alcoholic problems.
Drugs in the long-term eventually cause negative health effects and addiction.

However, there is a solution to fix all of this. We will support generation after generation after generation with this idea. No longer will people be suffering from the effects of drugs. No longer will children, teens, and adults have problems with drugs.

To fix the problem of drugs and alcohol, we should use all the drugs in the world. We should gather up all the marijuana in the world, all the syringes with heroin, and all the meth. Any type of drug we can think of, we gather it up. After compiling all the drugs, we will solve the problem of drugs by using all the drugs. We will inject all the heroin into our veins. We will smoke all the marijuana in the world until we can't understand anything anymore. We will swallow, snort, and smoke every inch of meth there is out there until we go crazy.

All of this is for our future generations. We will create a better world out there. They won't even know what drugs are after this. They will no longer have to deal with drug problems at home, at school, or anywhere. The world will be drug-free and a better place for everyone.

"The Conscience of the Hacker" Response

I liked "The Conscience of the Hacker". It told me the story of how a certain person views the world. I'm seeing the world from the Mentor's point of view. The Mentor also talks about things I, along with many others could relate to. I'm pretty sure a lot of us could remember a time when our teacher explained how to do something for the millionth time. I also like how the Mentor showed how other people viewed him; he knew how he was different from the others. The essay even shows how a kid can grow up to become a mastermind hacker. Overall, what I took from this essay is that everyone has a story. Everyone has a reason for why they do certain things.

If he were to just complain, we wouldn't listen to him, but since he's funny, we listen to him.

"A Modest Proposal" Response

Jonathan Swift uses diction and syntax to make his whole document seem significant and major. The diction used makes the document formal, whereas the syntax used makes the document give off a serious and important vibe. This is a great combination since the whole document is satire. At first, the impression the document had on me is that the author is crazy. After a closer reading, I realized that he's addressing the problem that's happening in his town. The document was a brilliant way to get people's attention on the issue at hand.

"The Right To Your Opinion" Response

I am entitled to my opinion. My sister is entitled to her opinion. My friends are entitled to their opinions. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, if you were to say "I am entitled to my opinion" in an argument that has nothing to do with one's rights, you are a fool. I believe people use that phrase as a defense. People don't like being wrong; they like being right. It's human nature, but sometimes we have to accept that we're wrong. Everyone has different views on everything. We don't have to consider someone else's opinion, but we should try to understand why a person thinks another way. Sometimes, a person has great reasons as to why they think a certain way. We can learn from each other, and the more people that understand that, the better this world will be.

Satire Example #1

Racial injustice is one of the biggest problems in America. It was a problem in the past and it's still a problem today. While both parents in this picture are giving their child "the talk", they are unfortunately having completely different conversations.

Response to Reading - "The Laughing Heart"

"The Laughing Heart" by Charles Bukowski, is an amazing poem. It is a motivational poem that makes you think about your entire life. It makes you think about all those times you took a chance and those moments when you were brave. The poem recognizes that there are both good times and bad times in life as well.  To my surprise, Charles Bukowski, a man who went through so many terrible things in life, was able to make such a great and optimistic poem.

"Richard Cory" Analysis

The poem "Richard Cory" is written and narrated from the perspective of an unnamed poor person. The poor person describes the life of Richard Cory and how Richard has everything people want: money, education, and the admiration of the entire town. Additionally, Richard is described as well-mannered and a gentleman. Even though Richard has all of these qualities and sought-after items, he, unfortunately, kills himself. The question, in the end, is "Why did Richard kill himself?"
